A pochi giorni di distanza dalla prima del film “Roger Waters - The wall” ho avuto il grande piacere di poter dialogare con il figlio: Harry Waters, musicista che oltre ad essersi distinto con onore negli anni, grazie ad una brillante carriera artistica, ha preso parte sia al Tour di The Wall, che in passato a quello di The Dark side of the Moon.
Harry è stato così disponibile, da rilasciare una breve intervista in merito al film in cui compare egli stesso, nei momenti sul palco durante i concerti ed in sequenze più intimistiche e familiari.
Ciao Harry, è un piacere ed un grande onore per me, poterti parlare quest’oggi. Ti ringrazio per l’opportunità e per il tempo a noi dedicato.
Ti abbiamo visto di recente sul grande schermo insieme a tuo padre Roger, nel suo monumentale e fantastico docu-film “Roger Waters: The Wall”.
The Wall è sempre stato parte della tua vita fin da piccolo ed in un certo senso, spero di non sbagliarmi nel dire che sei cresciuto con lui; all’età di 2 anni pronunciando “Guarda mamma, c’è un aeroplano nel cielo”, la tua voce
incisa diveniva ufficialmente l’intro di “Goodbye blue sky”, successivamente da adulto hai seguito tuo padre in tour dal 2002, fino alla tua comparsa nell’attuale film di Sean Evans.
Come descriveresti il tuo rapporto con questo album e come pensi abbia influenzato la tua crescita personale e scelte di musicista?
H.W. - È stato il primo album dei Pink Floyd che ho amato. L’ho ascoltato davvero molto da ragazzo, prima di scoprire altri album in catalogo. Ha avuto un forte impatto su di me e sui miei gusti musicali mentre crescevo.
La mise-en-scene di The Wall in buona parte concerne la costruzione di un palco gigantesco, scenografie enormi ed effetti speciali grandiosi, pertanto l’impatto sul pubblico non concerne solo la bellezza della musica, ma anche la somma di tutto questo, quel “qualcosa di magico” derivante dall’opera monumentale del film di Alan Parker. Durante gli anni e gli svariati concerti, c’è stato un particulare momento che ti piacerebbe condividere con noi?
H.W. - Mi ricordo quando a Santiago in Chile nel 2012 or giù di lì, ho assistito al concerto con il resto della band. Lo show è stato montato per noi ed abbiamo assistito a ciò che gli spettatori vedono notte dopo notte. È stato piuttosto incredibile, anche senza musicisti sul palco! Mi piace particolarmente il momento in cui il muro cade alla fine.

Hello Harry, It’s a pleasure and great honour talking to you today. Thanks ever so much for this opportunity, and for your time. We’ve recently seen you on screen, together with you father, Roger, in his m
onumental and stunning docu-film “Roger Waters: The Wall”. Since you were little, “The Wall” has been part of your life, and somehow I hope not be wrong by saying that you actually grew up with it, at the age of two by pronouncing "Look, mummy, there's an aeroplane up in the sky”, your voice became the opening part of “good bye blue sky”, later on as adult, you’ve followed your father on tour since 2002, and presently you feature on the film by Sean Evans.
How would you like to describe your relationship to this album, and how did it actually influence your personal growth, and choices as a musician?
H.W. - It was the first Pink Floyd record that I loved. I listened to it a lot as a child before I discovered the other albums in the catalogue. It had a real impact on me and my taste in music going forward.
The mise-en-scene of The Wall greatly regards the creation of a huge stage, having a massive scenario with amazing special effects, so the impact on the audience does not merely concern the beauty of the music performed, but also that “kind of magic” gained from the monumental artworks inspired to the film by Alan Parker. Throughout the years, and concerts, has there been a particular moment or event you’d like to share with us?
H.W. - I remember watching the show in Santiago Chile with the rest of the band in 2012 or so. They ran the show for us and we got to see what all the fans get to see night after night. It was quite incredible, albeit with no musicians on the stage ! I particularly like it when the wall comes down at the end.
